StoryCorps to Interview 120 Valley Residents

KJZZ hosts opening ceremony and press conference Jan. 6 11:30 a.m., at Burton Barr Central Library.

(Jan. 4, 2011) - StoryCorps, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to recording, preserving, and sharing the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs, will record interviews with Valley residents from Jan. 6 - 29 as part of its cross-country MobileBooth tour.

StoryCorps’ MobileBooth—an Airstream trailer outfitted with a recording studio— will be parked at the Phoenix Public Library’s Burton Barr Central Library (1221 N. Central Ave.) throughout the month of January. The StoryCorps team will collaborate with public radio station KJZZ 91.5 FM to record 120 interviews. StoryCorps’ MobileBooth interviews are conducted between two people who know and care about each other. A trained StoryCorps facilitator guides participants through the interview process. KJZZ will air selections of the local interviews recorded in the StoryCorps MobileBooth and create special programming related to the project. Segments of select interviews may also air nationally on NPR’s Morning Edition. With participant permission, all StoryCorps interviews will be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Governor Jan Brewer will be the first participant to record an interview on opening day Jan 6.

KJZZ and the Phoenix Public Library will host an opening ceremony and a press conference to introduce the StoryCorps team to the community and members of the media, who will have opportunities to interview StoryCorps staff and participants, program partners and local community leaders.

Opening ceremony and press conference with welcome remarks by: KJZZ General Manager Jim Paluzzi, City of Phoenix Councilman Michael Nowakowski - District 7, City of Phoenix City Librarian Toni Garvey, MCCCD Chancellor Rufus Glasper, Rio Salado College President Chris Bustamante, and StoryCorps Site Supervisor Lilly Sullivan. Councilwoman Thelda Williams, District 1 and other community leaders will also be available for interviews.

General Press Guidelines
• Cameras will be allowed in the MobileBooth before and after interviews. Photographs and video can be shot from outside the window during interviews.
• Press can listen to interviews with wireless headphones from outside the booth (with participant approval).
• Press can interview participants before and after their StoryCorps interviews. The Governor’s schedule does not permit time for media interviews.
