Big Savings for College Students

As many college students can attest, discovering “hidden” discounts and savings is like making the 3-point shot at the buzzer! It’s exhilarating and game-changing at the same time. While some students take advantage of movie theater and museum savings, they might be surprised to learn that student discounts are also available almost every industry imaginable.

Whatever the favorite pastime- be it shopping or catching up with the Morris twins at a Phoenix Suns game- there are countless opportunities to save on many activities and products.

In need of electronics? Surf the likes of Best Buy or the Apple store for savings on laptops, tablets and other gadgets, or head over to Amazon for student discounts and free two-day shipping.

Maybe you’re more interested in computer software. Visit Journey Ed, an online retailer specializing in student software. The site offers savings of up to 85% off retail prices for registered students, and pricing is even better when accessed through partner institutions, such as Tempe-based Rio Salado College.

Educational partnerships exist to save students money while they pursue certificates and degrees. For example, Maricopa County Community College students are eligible for substantial savings on Microsoft products such as Microsoft Office 365, which they can download for free through their student portal.

As the cold months drag on, wanderlust may set in and students can find themselves checking websites to plan that all important spring break trip. While traveling poses budgetary challenges for many students, discount options do exist.

EF College Break is designed to bring college students between the ages of 18-28 to some of the most exciting and exotic destinations around the world. Trips are scheduled to coincide with major holidays or school vacations: summer, spring break and New Year. Prices are guaranteed to fit any budget, with the company also offering monthly payment plan options.

If students would rather plan their own trips, the website Student Universe is another travel option, offering cheap flights, hotels, tours and rail options.

Students with good grades can parlay their academic success into discounts. Many auto insurance companies, such as Geico, State Farm, Allstate and Esurance, will dramatically cut monthly rates for students who succeed academically. Just ask for the “good student discount.”

Additional online resources for student discounts can be found at, or, for a yearly fee, students can join discount clubs like Student Advantage or Edhance, which provide access to thousands of worldwide discount opportunities.

What are you waiting for? If you’re a college student (or know one), it’s about time you took advantage of all of the great discounts and savings opportunities. Next time you visit a favorite restaurant, retail shop or engage in a favorite activity, don’t be shy - ask about any “hidden” student discounts.
