Have you ever wondered what the secret to student success is?

While it is different for every person, Rio Salado Counselor Amberly Lebeck Brown has a story to share about how one student’s success went hand in hand with positive thinking.

“Positive thinking is not a new concept, nor are the ways to implement it into your daily life—vision boards, positive self-talk, sticky notes. The premise remains the same - choosing positivity is healthy for you.

I discovered this for myself years ago, when I decided to wake up each morning and proclaim, ‘Today will be a good day.’ It was hard to believe at times, especially when trying to cope with a cranky kid in the morning or sitting in rush hour traffic. I kept repeating the phrase to myself even if I did not really believe it at the time. Eventually I did believe it, but this story isn’t about me; it’s about Britteny Schultz.
Britteny is a student I met about a year and a half ago. She was moving past a tough period in her life and was ready to earn her GED diploma so Britteny began taking High School Equivalency courses at Rio Salado College. Last December, she came to my office to fill me in on what had been going on in her life.

Britteny was nearly halfway finished with completing her high school diploma. After long days at work, she would find herself wanting to go home and rest. She decided to implement positive thinking into her life and would repeat to herself, ‘I can do this and I will do this.’ Despite her personal problems, Britteny became motivated to attend class and earn her GED, with credit to positive thinking and hard work.”
