Welcome to the past! Our next stop on the 40th anniversary Throwback Thursday timeline is 1997-99.

In the late 1990s, Rio Salado was all about the smile. To help address a critical shortage of dental hygienists, Rio partnered with the Arizona Dental Association and Delta Dental Insurance to create the Rio Salado School of Dental Hygiene. In 1998, a building located at 12th street and Washington in downtown Phoenix was renovated to create a state-of-the-art facility where students trained to become dental hygienists during the 15-month program.

The dental hygiene program represented a success for Rio on two fronts: the college forged a successful business-education partnership to benefit the local community and offered students an education that could lead to employment opportunities.

In fact, the demand for skilled hygienists was so strong at the time that many students had already secured jobs while awaiting the outcome of their licensing exams.

"This program exemplifies Rio Salado's approach to meeting the needs of the community · by partnering with employers," said Dr. Linda Thor, who was president of Rio Salado College at the time. "The result is a triple win -- for students, for the dental community, and for the college."
