Members come from all around the world and from diverse backgrounds, but they all share one thing in common-- a desire to continue their education and reach for their dream!

Joining the new inductees at the ceremony were family members, Rio Salado staff and representatives from the Arizona Department of Education, Adult Education Services.

Dual Student Becomes Hero for Special Needs Kids

Snapshot from MCTV feature, showing Lexi interviewing on camera in new sensory room

Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” Lexi Von Hatten, a Rio Salado College dual enrollment student at Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale is realizing the power she has to be a hero for special needs students!

This heartwarming MCTV115 feature by reporter Lisa Acquafredda reveals how a school project to create a sensory room for special needs students is creating a rippling effect she hadn’t quite imagined.

“It was just eye-opening to see that what we are doing is working and it just inspired me to keep going,” said Von Hatten, who hopes to be a teacher someday. “The ultimate dream is to change kids’ lives.”

Von Hatten is a member of Educators Rising Arizona, which mentors students to become teachers and encouraged her to take on the sensory room project for Mountain Ridge. Von Hatten will present her project at the Educators Rising state competition this spring.
