Rio Salado College is offering an online certificate program that trains community health workers to help bring better dental health to people in underserved communities.

Classes for Rio Salado's Community Dental Health Coordinator (CDHC) program, created by the American Dental Association (ADA), begin on Aug. 25. The class is limited to certified dental assistants and registered dental hygienists.

The registration deadline is Aug. 1, 2015, however, this deadline may be extended provided students have most requirements fulfilled by Aug. 1.  Please call for approval.

“CDHCs truly are making headway in improving access to care for people living in communities suffering disproportionately from dental disease,” said ADA President Dr. Maxine Feinberg. “We are excited about the extent to which these future CDHCs can help break down the barriers impeding people from attaining good oral health.”

Rio Salado’s classes will take place during three 16-week trimesters, followed by internships. Approximately 10 students will be accepted.

The college is offering the program to prospective CDHC students in Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington State, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming and the District of Columbia.

“This program will not only be an asset to dentists in Arizona, but to dentists throughout the country,” said Arizona Dental Association Executive Director Kevin Earle.

CDHCs are trained to provide oral health education and disease prevention, and to help people navigate the public health system to receive care from dentists. Rio Salado College hosted the initial ADA CDHC pilot program, from which 34 people graduated.

“We are thrilled that Rio Salado is again hosting this wonderful program, which will ensure that more Arizona residents, as well as others throughout the country, will be able to enjoy good oral health.”

Rio Salado Honors Outstanding Educators

Image of Holly Harper and Kishia Brock.

"When work becomes play, and play becomes your work, your life unfolds."

That Robert Frost quote rings true for Scottsdale resident Holly Harper and Phoenix resident Kishia Brock. As recipients of the 2014-15 John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Awards, these educators prove that when you love what you do for a living, it is easy to make a difference in the lives of others.

The national award is given to community college educators who demonstrate excellence in community college teaching and leadership. What makes it even more special is that recipients are nominated by their colleagues.

Harper is the faculty chair of Rio Salado’s dental programs. Among her duties is managing the college dental clinic, which provides discounted preventive dental hygiene services to the public.

Harper at Rio Salado Dental Clinic with volunteer instructors
“What I love most about my job is working with the students in the dental clinic and interacting with patients,” Harper said. “I am also proud to see the students graduate and realize their dreams.”

Harper can relate to her students on another level. She earned a bachelor’s degree in health science 26 years after receiving her associate degree in dental hygiene.

“I know first-hand what it is like to return to school as an adult learner working full-time,” said Harper. “So, to be nationally recognized for teaching excellence leaves me at a loss for words.”

Rio Salado Faculty Senate President Kerrie Specker said Harper was instrumental during the college’s recent successful re-accreditation process of both the dental assisting and dental hygiene programs.

“Holly has a focus on student success, which is evidenced by the success of the dental program,” Specker said. “Last year, both graduating classes had a 100% pass rate on the national and clinical board exams.”

Fellow honoree Brock serves as the newly-appointed vice president of strategy and compliance at the Maricopa County Community College District.

She accepted the post after 17 years at Rio Salado College, where she started her career as a bilingual academic advisor and worked her way up to vice president of student affairs.

“One thing I am most proud of is the development and implementation of Rio’s electronic student file advisement tool,” Brock said. “This system is the backbone for ‘RioCompass,’ which is an online platform for tracking a student’s degree progress.”

RioCompass enables students to set academic and career goals, and mark their progress toward these goals, and instructors to monitor their progress.

“I am also very proud of the online student success helpdesk, which assists 1,000 students each year in pursuing their educational goals,” said Brock.

Both of Brock’s initiatives have received national recognition as effective student success models.

“It is an incredible honor to be nominated by my colleagues and wonderful to be recognized for doing work that I absolutely love and feel so fortunate to be involved in every day,” Brock said.

College Dental Clinic Helps Kids Smile

Rio Salado College dental student Callista Olivares
demonstrates how food sticks to teeth.
Rio Salado College’s Dental Hygiene Clinic and the Arizona Dental Foundation joined forces on February 7 to host a free dental clinic for local elementary school children as part of the national “Give Kids a Smile” initiative.

The American Dental Association launched the Give Kids a Smile program nationally in 2003 as a way for dentists across the country to join with others in their community to provide dental services to underserved children.

The goal of Give Kids a Smile is to increase awareness about the importance of dental hygiene during the month of February, which is National Children’s Dental Health month.

Children from several local elementary schools and organizations participated in the event. Each child received free dental exams, X-rays, cleaning, fluoride, goodie bags, and fun tips on staying healthy.

Services were provided by 42 Rio Salado College dental hygiene and dental assisting students. Instructors and support staff also donated their time and expertise for the event.

“This is a great way for us to give our students a real-life practical learning experience while providing a vital service for the community,” said Holly Harper, faculty chair for dental programs at Rio Salado. “We want to educate children on the benefits of proper oral health care at the earliest age possible. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children, but is almost entirely preventable.”

Harper added that community service is one of the core principles of the Rio Salado College culture.

“The college participates in events and programs that benefit the community all throughout the year,” Harper said. “In fact, we require our dental students to volunteer at least 10 hours during their program of study.”

Students enjoyed the clinic experience as they were able to put practical skills to use and interact with patients.

“Having children in my chair was exciting,” said dental hygiene student Amanda Jacka. “It allowed me to learn even more and I also was able to have fun while teaching kids what everything was. It's rewarding to know I am helping somebody while they help me at the same time with skills I will be able to utilize for the rest of my career.”

The Rio Salado Dental Clinic is open to community members and their families. Children must be 4 years of age or older and are generally seen during the summer semester. Fees range from $25-$35 depending on age.

The clinic is located at 2250 W. 14th Street in Tempe. Clinic hours and appointments vary. All new patients must have a screening visit prior to a dental hygiene appointment. To schedule a screening appointment, call (480) 377-4100. For more information visit www.riosalado.edu/programs/dental_hygiene.
